Geographical Information Systems for Development

Description
This programme trains student to become theoretically aware and technically proficient in the use GIS and other computer-based tools for spatial analysis.
Objectives
This training programme seeks to:
- Provide awareness of the research potentials and limits of GIS and related information technologies in research, and enable students to understand GIS as part of a wider field of methodological traditions (both qualitative and quantitative);
- Encourage sound judgement of project feasibility and a structured approach to problem solving through extended project work (specifically the capacity to select and execute manageable, meaningful and novel research topics within a time-constrained environment);
- Develop practical competencies in a range of quantitative methodologies relevant to the application of GIS to a broad range of research in the physical and social sciences;
- Contextualise GIS knowledge systems within a wide field of applications, such as human geography and social science knowledge production by way of exposure to theoretical debates in these fields.
Pedagogy
The unique instruction methods offer tutorial-style of teaching and discussion environment within smaller groups based on a suite of contemporary research themes. The teaching aim is to foster discussion and debate between instructors and trainees to identify and explore theory, methods and practice in an academic space that encourages a critical dialogue.
An independent and original dissertation is an integral component of the program. In order to equip trainees with the necessary skills to undertake high quality research, course modules in research design and research methods teach skills and competences in a suite of common and emerging research practices and methods employed in GIS, policy and management research.
Scientific objectives
Link theory, hypothesis, methods, data and field work so as to identify and develop advanced research questions and design.
Entrepreneurial objectives
Graduates from this programme easily gets employed by local government, reputable national and international for-profit and non-profit organizations amongst others They become Graduates also find employment in the private sector with productive careers in industry and consulting firms.
Trainees use skills grasps from this training, few years into the programme to generate income and fund the rest of their studies.
